Pot Nation

Stoners inhaled a sigh of relief yesterday as Washington became the second state in the US to legalize recreational use of marijuana.  I never really understood the appeal of pot.  It makes you sleepy and gives you the munchies; it’s like the anti-bodybuilder drug of choice.  Plus, stoners always think their jokes are way funnier than they actually are.

If I were to create a dream legalized recreational drug it would be one that I could take in the morning, run a marathon, come home and organize my entire house, and then have the super-charged memory to (learn and then) teach my children to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently before dinner.  And it would stop all sugar cravings.  It would also be cool if it could make me fly.  I think maybe I’m looking for the blue pill from The Matrix.  Or the red one.  But I’m sure my HMO would make me take some green pill instead that would only let me run a 5k and crave Panda Express.

Of course, people in Uruguay were probably not impressed with Washington state’s big news, as they live in the first country in the world to make it completely legal to buy, sell and consume cannabis.  The prices are set by the President’s office through a special government agency created to monitor it.  The goal is to make the government sanctioned pot cheaper than the drug lords’ product, decreasing the black market demand and thereby reducing violence caused by drug warlords.

I hope it works; no one should have to live in constant fear of the murders committed in the name of profit so some college kid half a world away can get high.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out in America and abroad.

What are your thoughts?  Do you think pot should be legalized?
