Bethany Hartshorn – OCR Inspiration

My main goal for 2018 is to encourage as many people as possible to get healthy this year.  One of the obstacles that some of us face is trying to keep up a healthy lifestyle when we have medical issues that get in the way.  Rather than give up on exercise and think it can’t be done, I’d like to introduce you to my friend, Bethany Hartshorn, who has completed dozens of OCR (obstacle course races).

That alone is an accomplishment.  Even cooler though is that Bethany has MS.  Anyone looking for a little inspiration should check out her Instagram feed @hartwarrior.  Here’s her story, in her own words, lightly edited for clarity.

Bethany’s OCR Story

Tell us a little bit about yourself…

I was diagnosed with MS eight years ago but didn’t start getting into OCR (obstacle course racing) until I started watching American Ninja Warrior four years ago, and decided I wanted to be one.  I definitely don’t let MS define me and to be honest it didn’t even cross my mind when I started working out and preparing for races.  Now that I am on medication it’s a bit more in-my-face reality.

How many OCR races have you run?
Since the end of 2013 I have run 25, but I run foot races as well, so total races is 40.

Why OCR over other sports?
I seriously love American Ninja Warrior and this gives me a way to do something fun, besides running, and challenge myself without actually doing the TV show, lol.

You live with health issues, but don’t let it get in the way of fitness.  What advice do you have for people who face similar health issues?

You have to believe in yourself and not let it limit you. Though I am in a good position right now to say that.

What’s a typical workout for you?
I don’t go to crazy; I found the more I worked out the more often I would relapse, so I keep it to an hour class (boot camp, strength training, mobility types of classes) or a run.

Monkey bars!
What kinds of foods do you eat when you train?

I changed my diet immediately to gluten-free but I eat basically healthy.  Sometimes I don’t eat enough – which I need to get better at.

Climbing the wall
What’s your favorite quote?
Believe in Yourself. I have this tattooed on my left forearm.  I plan on doing OCR as long as I consider it still fun or rewarding.

Believe in Yourself
We hope you keep running for a long time!  Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us.
And remember, if Bethany can do it, so can you!  Don’t let MS, fear, your age, a busy schedule or anything else hold you back.  Make this your year to get healthy.
