A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Clean Eating Bandwagon

***If you are my trainer, don’t read this***

So, you know how I said after the competition I was going to have a Dirty Eating Vacation Week and then two days into it I was like, “Yuck!  I feel awful!  I’m getting back on my meal plan!” ?  Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the clean eating bandwagon…

I ran into an Indian restaurant.

Can I tell you how amazing white rice tastes?  It tastes AMAZING.  You know what else is amazing?  Macaroni and cheese and red wine in a French restaurant.  Yeah, I’m bringing it.  My Dirty Eating Vacation Week has gone global.

And let’s be real here, who cuts short their vacation?  Who says, yes, the Bahamas is lovely and I already paid for the hotel, but I really need to get back to Pflugerville, Texas so I can clean the garage?  I mean, really?  Plus, I’m at the FitBloggin’13 convention in Portland, Oregon with no access to a grocery store, microwave or refrigerator.  How can I even REMOTELY follow a meal plan and eat clean six times a day?

***OK, if you are my trainer, you can read starting HERE***

But I did not train this hard to go back to square one!  Being in a hotel is no excuse to go crazy.  In the words of Theodore Roosevelt, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”

There is a Rite Aid down the street.  I had to dig through aisles of potato chips and Oreos, but I found the cleanest food I could find and bought it.  The cashier said, “We sell that?” so Ima take that as a good sign.

Also, I found a place that serves salads.  Let’s hear it for vegetables!  Whoo hoo!  I don’t have a fridge, but I do have an ice bucket, so that helps.

And my swag bag from the convention had a box of organic quinoa and chia seed cereal in it, so I have some healthy carbs to go with my tuna.

Is it perfect?  No.  But it’s getting back to where my body is happiest, and that’s eating clean.

How about you?  When you are on vacation do you try to eat healthy or do you just throw everything out the window and eat whatever you feel like?

  1. Here’s the tips I give my clients while travelling over the summer so they don’t undo all their hard work while on the road. https://www.facebook.com/LeiaRittPersonalTrainer/posts/150559448468505

I usually end up cleaning it up after day 1. Mostly because I go nuts and then feel like crap! No fun when you go to unpack the suitcase and realize that nothing fits after 12 hours of sampling the local fare. But if I’m in New Orleans, better believe one evening will be spent at Cafe du Monde enjoying every bite of my beignets and cafe au lait. And you can’t go to Chicago without having a slice or two of deep dish. Followed by a run on Lake Michigan of course 😉

  2. My bad eating splurge usually comes to a halt on day 2 of my vacation. I quickly remember why I eat healthy when the suitcase full of clothes I packed no longer fits 12 hours after arriving at my destination. But I like to sample the local fare. It’s part of the experience. If I’m in New Orleans, there’s no way I’m saying no to beignets and a cafe au lait or deep dish pizza in Chicago.

Here’s the tips I give my clients about eating right and working out on the road. Just because you’re on vacation, doesn’t mean that you’re on a vacation from healthy living as well.

  3. I love the cashier at Rite Aid’s response! Classic. And good for you. Food is fantastic and should be enjoyed. But your wise to find a way to keep your diet in check at least somewhat. I applaud your efforts! I am just about to go on vacation myself and am going to have to get creative myself. I have found that even a hot dog stand you can usually create a salad from the fixings!

  4. Why bother eating careful when your on holidays? You can lose the weight later, im sure you can do that by excersise alone. Dont become obsessed, as life is passihng all around you, and some of the best memories are flavours and smells that you should savour- like xmas, holidays and birthdays- why be the odd one out eating bland at these times, let the brown hair down roxanne

  5. I always go into vacation with a plan. Then it goes out the window. Usually it goes that way if we’re meeting up with friends, because then the decision doesn’t rest solely on me and my husband and there always ends up being lots of junk food and booze.
