Olympic Torch Relay

Fire was considered sacred;  literally a gift from the god Prometheus.  In Ancient Greece a fire ignited by mirrors from the sun would burn in front of the alter of Hera to represent the opening of the Olympic Games and would continue to burn until the games concluded.

Touching torches to the flames, heralds were sent running with the torch to each village to call a sacred truce to their disputes so everyone could come and enjoy the games.

That tradition follows today.  It starts in Greece and then travels to the host country where it travels from town to town until it will arrive at the city where the games are held.

It is considered an honor to carry the torch.  It is a time for countries and countrymen to call a truce and be inspired by the athletes as they struggle against each other and against themselves to run faster, jump higher and go the distance.
