Skin Tips for Winter Weather

Austin, Texas has decided to be trendy and suddenly turned cold today.  In fact, it’s going to (maybe) snow a few flurries tonight.  I hate the cold.

“But, Lisa,” you say, “Aren’t you from New Jersey where it snows?  And aren’t you Swedish?”  Yes, and yes, and there is a reason why I moved:  I HATE COLD WEATHER!  I have super sensitive skin and the cold makes my skin itchy and chapped.  If you are like me, here are…Lisa Traugott - Winter hat

3 Skin Tips for Winter Weather

  1. Moisturize.  Cold wind, low humidity and chilly temperatures dry out your skin because your body contains more water than the air, so the water in your skin evaporates faster.  To counter this, try oil-based skin creams, which make a barrier between the elements and your skin.  Usually moisturizers labeled “night cream” are oil based.
  2. Take quick, lukewarm showers.  While long, hot showers feel great, they can break down the lipids in your skin, allowing moisture to escape.  *Sigh*  So take a quick, warm shower instead.  If you’re really hardcore you can take a cold shower, but where’s the fun in that?
  3. Use humidifiers in your home.  Whether it is central heating or a fireplace, hot air removes the moisture from your skin.  Humidifiers adds the moisture back so your skin won’t dry out as fast.  But make sure you change the water daily, and clean it out so it doesn’t become a germ fest.

Stay warm!  Do you have any winter skin tips?

  1. I know I should take lukewarm or tepid showers, but I can’t. In winter I need heat! Lots of blankets, hot water, high heat settings in the car. It is terribly drying to the skin, but I’m a heat addict.

    1. I am too – which is why I live in a (usually) hot state! I’m not at all happy with this whole “winter” thing.
