Faithfully Fit – Back to the Basics

Back to the basics.  No process foods.  No artificial sweeteners.  Vegetables.  Berries.  Chicken.  Fish.  Brown rice.  The Bikini Diet worked for me because it got rid of all that extra stuff my body just didn’t need.  That was February 2012.

Last fall not only was I malnourished physically, but a little lost spiritually as well.  I was raised Catholic and the scandal made me take a break from the church entirely.  But the truth was, I missed God.  So we started looking for a church.

We stumbled upon Austin Stone, a non-denominational church that some of our tenants attended.  (They were nice people, so why not try it out?)

They had FREE childcare.  OK – I was praising God just for that alone.  The preacher, Matt Carter, just returned from Israel.  While he was there he delivered the most influential sermon of all:  Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount verbatim, in the same location where Jesus spoke over 2,000 years ago.

It’s strange to admit, but I never heard the entire sermon from start to finish before that day; just segments of it.  Struck by the beauty and poetry and simplicity of the language, an invigorated peacefulness washed over me.

Life can get cluttered with things intended to make life easier (fast food,) or more intense (church retreat,) or just something to numb you (television.)  But when you reconnect with just the basics some powerful things can happen.

  1. Like! I completely understand leaving because of the scandals. I’m so happy that you found a church you like. I think it’s important to have a place to go where a person can listen to God.
