Pot Nation

Stoners inhaled a sigh of relief yesterday as Washington became the second state in the US to legalize recreational use of marijuana.  I never really understood the appeal of pot.  It makes you sleepy and gives you the munchies; it’s like the anti-bodybuilder drug of choice.  Plus, stoners always think their jokes are way funnier than they actually are.

If I were to create a dream legalized recreational drug it would be one that I could take in the morning, run a marathon, come home and organize my entire house, and then have the super-charged memory to (learn and then) teach my children to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently before dinner.  And it would stop all sugar cravings.  It would also be cool if it could make me fly.  I think maybe I’m looking for the blue pill from The Matrix.  Or the red one.  But I’m sure my HMO would make me take some green pill instead that would only let me run a 5k and crave Panda Express.

Of course, people in Uruguay were probably not impressed with Washington state’s big news, as they live in the first country in the world to make it completely legal to buy, sell and consume cannabis.  The prices are set by the President’s office through a special government agency created to monitor it.  The goal is to make the government sanctioned pot cheaper than the drug lords’ product, decreasing the black market demand and thereby reducing violence caused by drug warlords.

I hope it works; no one should have to live in constant fear of the murders committed in the name of profit so some college kid half a world away can get high.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out in America and abroad.

What are your thoughts?  Do you think pot should be legalized?

  1. I’m personally happy that this is finally happening. As far as it being an anti bodybuilding drug, I think that’s a bit of a generalization. Their are 3 basic types of cannabis: indica (what people usually think of when they think of pot. This type usually makes people sleepy and hungry. Sativa ( which usually energizes people and some say helps concentration and creativity), Hybrids are the final kind which are either indica or sativa dominant. I’ve read of many bodybuilder using cannabis in their training to focus, especially during heavy lifts.

This is just my option but it makes me happy to know that my future children won’t be subject to life changing consequences for something that’s been medically proven to be less harmful than alcohol.

    1. You know much more about cannabis than me! As far as bodybuilding goes, I only do basic over the counter supplements: BCAA powder, L-Glutamine, protein shakes and creatine, so I can’t really comment about the efficacy of sativa.

It appears that legalization is the wave of the future.

  2. Woohoo (I’m a Washingtonian)! Well, ok, I really don’t care too much about it as I’ve never smoked pot – Scout’s honor! Secondhand, plenty. Firsthand, never.

That first day when they opened they really didn’t have much pot available and it was stupid expensive. I can see positives to legalizing even though it may be regarded as a gateway drug. If it is legal everywhere then maybe it would be considered more like alcohol.

    1. It’s an interesting policy and social experiment. I’ve heard it argued both ways as to whether or not it is a gateway drug, so I wonder how (or if) legalization will impact other drug use. One of the key arguments to legalize it is that it will reduce drug warlord violence, much like the organized crime violence (think “Boardwalk Empire”) decreased after Prohibition ended. I hope that is the case, especially in Uruguay where the violence was really bad.
