An Exercise in Frustration

If you would like an exercise in frustration, try dealing with the medical world when a loved one is sick.  If you are an over-achiever, like my mom clearly is, and want a turbo charged dosage of annoyance, get sick over a holiday weekend. I would write about it, but life’s too short to relive that.

I haven’t been able to exercise at the nearby gym, or even run, because I’m afraid to leave my mom alone and, quite frankly, she is too.  She was on the floor alone for 24 hours before my brother found her, and it has shaken her, understandably.  The upside is that she finally agreed to sell her house, which is full of stairs, to look at single level homes.  Now we have to see if she wants to come back with me to Texas or move closer to my brother, locally.

Between doctor visits and naps I’m helping her empty out her house.  The coolest thing I found so far was our original Commodore 64.  I think the medical offices I’ve been dealing with must have these “computers” on their desks.  But I digress.

Food-wise, she’s been eating healthier in the past six days than she has in the past six months (which was the last time I visited her, and made her eat whole foods.)  I’ll cop to eating chocolate this week, my go-to stress food.  But I’m mainly cooking foods from my basic off-season meal plan, so we’re eating lots of fish, chicken, veggies, berries and sweet potatoes.

I bought a mini-grill last night and made her some chicken kabobs with peppers, onions and tomatoes over brown rice, so that was pretty tasty.

She starts physical therapy soon, so I’ll be interested to see what kinds of exercises they will have her do.  As for my own exercises, my brother is home from work now, so I’m going for a run to de-stress.

Side note – thank you all for your kinds words, emails and prayers for my mom’s quick recovery.  It means a lot and we appreciate it.

  1. Have you considered life alert? It’s great. They have the kind where it can sense a person falling so if they are unable to push the button it will still send help. The pendants are smaller (if your mom is worried about it ruining her outfit). I’m a PT and I strongly recommend them to many of my patients.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation! We saw an ad for them in AARP and will be setting it up before I fly home to Texas.

    1. Thanks for the kind thoughts 🙂
Also – the grill was a pretty awesome purchase…
