A Trip to Kids Club

It was Monday in Austin, so of course that meant school was cancelled.  My game plan was to wake up at 4 a.m. to do my cardio and strength training and then get back home before my husband went to work.  Ha ha ha!  I love that I make plans!

At 7:20 a.m. my daughter, Rylee, woke me up by pulling the covers off me saying, “Mom!  There’s no school today, so we were supposed to have our picnic at 7:22 a.m.!”  While I admire that she is so specific with telling time, I would have preferred the start time to be closer to 9:22 a.m.  Alas.

After our picnic, the kids did skateboard tricks and I fled to another room to avoid having a heart attack watching their stunt show while internally calculating our hospital bills.  The phone rang in my office.  On the other end were my kids, delighted at having figured out how to dial from my cell phone.

“Mommy, why can’t we buy dinosaur eggs in the grocery store?” giggled Rylee.

“Uh, I don’t know?” I answered, trying to complete the 100 page packet for our apartment building’s government filing due the end of the week.

“Because they’re EGG-tinct!  Get it?  Like extinct  ’cause they’re dinosaurs?”

“Ok, Rylee, please get your shoes on because we’re going to Daddy’s office and then to Kids Club at 24 Hour Fitness.”

“Yay!” shouts Rylee.  “No!” shouts Henry, simultaneously (and very loud, I might add) over the phone.  I hang up, put the papers in my gym bag, eat my meal #3, and give the kids some snacks to go.  After dropping off the packet to my husband, we drive over to Kids Club.

But now Rylee has decided she doesn’t want to go.  “Can’t I just stay home?  I’m practically ten, Mom!”

“Rylee, you’re six.”

“But that’s like ten in four years!”

“I want to workout with you,” says Henry.  (He likes to lift little 3 lb. weights next to me when I use my dumbbells at home.  His is also my Velcro child, and likes to remain attached to my hip whenever possible.)

“Well, they have a special gym just for kids, and a basketball net, and lots of other kids to play with.  Won’t that be fun?”

“No!  They should make the jungle gym on both sides so adults can climb with kids.  Can we go swimming?”

“No, honey, the pool is closed for winter.”

“But it’s 80 degrees today!” said Rylee.

“That’s because Austin weather makes no sense.  Remember last week when it snowed twice and they cancelled school?”

“It didn’t snow last week.”

“That’s right, they just cancelled school because the Austin school district makes no sense either.  We’re here!”

“No!  No!  No!” they chanted.  After much cajoling, they entered Kids Club and I did my workout.  Ninety minutes later I picked them up.

“Mom, can you come back later?” said both my kids, “we’re in the middle of a game.”

Really?  Really?  LOL

How about you?  Is it a bit of an ordeal for you to exercise when your kids are home?

  1. Love the conversations in this post. So, 6 is practically 10, wow 🙂 Taking note of that 🙂
My daughter also loves to exercise with me when I do opt for training at home. She have her own space right beside me.

    1. It’s just so funny to me how kids are in such a rush to get older and how older people would pay money to slow down the passage of time.
