Size Doesn’t Matter. Unless You’re Bodybuilding. Or having sex.

Size doesn’t matter.  Unless you’re bodybuilding.  Or having sex.  Then it matters a whole lot.

I won’t comment on the sex part, but one of my goals for this competition is to gain size.  It’s trickier than it looks.   And, of course, (here’s that 90/10 Rule again) the most important part of gaining muscle is diet.

I eat CONSTANTLY.  Six meals a day and sometimes I’m still hungry.  My trainer increased my carb intake to pile on the pounds and I get 5 oz. of protein each serving.  I even get to eat steak once a week!  Yahoo!   Why is protein important?  Per James Kohler’s article in Bodybuilding.com,

“Protein is made up of amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of your muscles and body. Without them, it would be impossible to build, repair or even maintain muscle tissue.”

He explains that when you have enough protein your body is in an anabolic state.  When you don’t have enough protein, you’re in a catabolic state, which means that your body will eat your muscle mass for energy.  Kinda creepy, huh?

Most of my protein comes from egg whites.  Right now I eat 15 egg whites a day, give or take.  Don’t believe me?  (See pic.) I buy 5 dozen eggs at a time.  The kids want a pet dog, but I’m considering buying a pet chicken instead.

Other protein comes in the form of chicken, fish, and protein powders.  To balance out all this protein I have to drink about a gallon of water per day, since it’s hard on the kidneys.

If you are wondering how much protein to eat in order for you specifically to build muscle, talk to your doctor and/or a dietician.

Happy lifting!
