What are the Benefits of Tea?
I’m a coffee drinker, but recently I started looking into tea as another option. The tea I’m most familiar with is green tea, because I heard it was good for weight loss. According to Dr. Oz, this is true. Apparently green tea contains a natural chemical called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) that increases a hormone in us that signals we are full. The feeling of satiety is a good thing when you are trying to stop snacking. Another side benefit is that EGCG is good at fighting cancer. (Source: Health Benefits of Tea – Dr. Oz Show.)
I was recently given some samples of tea made with Tulsi, also known as “Holy Basil”. It’s considered a sacred plant in India and has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years for everything from stress relief to the common cold. According to WebMD, Holy Basil is thought to reduce inflammation and lower blood sugar levels for people with diabetes. (Source: Holy Basil – WebMD.)
“Oh sure,” you’re thinking right now, “it’s great for digestion and fighting cancer, but does it taste good?” I sampled Organic India’s Green Tea, Pomegranate Green and Masala Chai. They all tasted pretty good; my favorite was the Masala Chai, which I added a little bit of almond milk to. I also like that the company works with organic family farmers in India and have set up two clinics to support health for the farmers and their families.
According to the Tea Association of the USA, Americans consumed over 65 billion servings of tea in 2011, most of it iced. (Source: Tea Fact Sheet). Is hot tea better than cold tea? Most articles I’ve read say they both are great antioxidant drinks, the only problem is when people add a lot of sugar to their iced tea. (I guess the same rules apply to adding sugar to your coffee…)
What about you? Do you prefer coffee or tea?

I am a tea drinker. I drink tea as much as I do water! I normally brew my own tea, and I prefer loose leaf. However, this summer I have been in love with Steaz zero calorie iced teaz. They have tons of flavors, but most if not all of them are green tea. All of them has 10 grams of sugar except for the unsweetened lemon. You should try them… soooooo good and organic!!!
I read that loose tea is better than packaged. Will have to try the Steaz. Thanks!
Tea!! I find that since I have never really liked coffee, green tea has enough caffeine give me a pick me up if needed, with out giving me the crash that coffee gives me. Also I like tea better, because you don’t have to add cream and sugar to it to make it taste better, like most people do with coffee.
I’m so guilty of adding creamer to my coffee, and I almost never do that with tea.
I would really love to get into tea, I just can’t. I’m a total coffee drinker and went from cream and splenda to just a splash of milk in it. I’ve read about all the tea benefits but I drink about 5-7 cups of coffee a day. I know it sounds like a lot but it is what is. There is this tea that I follow on instagram @yourtea.com. This is the one tea that I think I will try for all the benefits it offers. Maybe it will cut down my coffee intake!
Left to my own devices, I will drink a pot of coffee a day. I don’t do that with tea. Will check out the site – thanks!
I am a morning coffee drinker but love tea in the afternoon. Try Zhena’s tea. Zhena’s carries many, many delicious flavors and just started a new wellness collection. Go to http://Www.zhenas.com if you are interested in giving the selections a try! 🙂 Tracy
Thanks, Tracy! Will check it out!
I’m a coffee drinker in the morning. Sometimes I’ll have tea in the afternoon but more in the winter because it feels too hot in the summer to drink it.
