Summer Safety Tips for Kids
Today is Little Henry’s birthday. His daddy gave him a skateboard and as a side bonus, gave me a heart attack. The worry center in my mom brain took over and I began picturing any number of scenarios that led to the emergency room. Of course, probably the most likely scenario is that my son will have fun with his skateboard, skin a knee or two, and decides he wants to do something much more dangerous fun.
Kids should enjoy their summer activities – and they can do it while staying safe too. Here are some:
Summer Safety Tips for Kids
Swimming
- Keep watch over kids in water. Don’t assume someone else is.
- If your kids can’t swim yet, have them wear floating devices.
- Teach your kids how to swim.
- Wear sunscreen to protect against ultraviolet rays.
Sports
- Helmets are your friends!
- Learn what to do if a concussion occurs. Here are Symptoms and Signs of a Concussion from the Mayo Clinic.
- Stay hydrated. I’ve typically read that adult should drink 8 glasses of water a day – but how much should kids drink? According to MiniWebTool’s drinking calculator ( Source: How Much Water to Drink A Day?)
- 1-3 years children – 4 cups as total beverages, including drinking water
- 4-8 years children – 5 cups
- 9-13 years boys – 8 cups
- 14-18 years boys – 11 cups
- 9-13 years girls – 7 cups
- 14-18 years girls – 8 cups
Stay safe and have fun! What fun activities are you doing this summer?
