Show Day!
If the 12 weeks of show prep for a bodybuilding competition are like Rocky, the competition itself is something between the Miss America pageant (minus talking about world peace) and the feeling you got when you were 13 and saw the final dance scene in Dirty Dancing for the first time. In short, it’s a guilty pleasure.
The team I’m on, Mel’s Machines, had six girls in this show, so one of our teammates, Lori, dubbed us the 6 pack.
The day started at 5 a.m. I posted my progress pictures and headed over to my trainer, Mel’s house for hair and make up. Since I was competing in a new division (figure) she wanted me to completely change up my look too. My friend from the team, Katie, dyed my hair red earlier in the week, and a new member of the team, Cassie, put in the hair extensions. I didn’t even recognize myself!
Meanwhile Mel did Brooke and Mama T’s eye make-up and we all carb loaded on pancakes. Can I tell you how incredibly fantastic pancakes taste after carb depleting for 3 months? Then we headed over to the competition, checked in and got our numbers.
The last two shows I did on my own, so I mostly interviewed people backstage. This time I was with my team, so it was a totally different experience. It was kind of like kicking back with your friends for a few (well, like 9) hours but in high heels and bikinis. And then we had a pillow fight! (We did not have a pillow fight.)
Four of us competed in figure and two of us competed in bikini. Here’s a trick to tell figure apart from bikini: look at the posing suits. Figure suits have an X on the back and the bottoms sit high over your hips making a V on the front bottom of your suit. Bikini suits are smaller, exposing a lot more of the booty, and the strings are off the hips. The poses are different too. Figure poses are 4 quarter turns, the end. Bikini chicks have to swagger and sash-shay to the back of the stage and be all sassy. It was so beyond me (I got no game.) Figure is way better for me. Except for the muscle part…
I’ve been lifting for about a year and a half now. Holy hell some of the women in my division look like they bench press me for a warm up set. Damn! OK, they earned their medals. But hey, check out my booty:
So I’m happy that Operation Ass Lift was a success. Now I’ll have to spend next year developing my shoulders and arms. It takes effort and time but effort and time is all it takes 😉
Here are some final pictures:
Thanks Mel! You’re an awesome trainer! I’m proud to be one of your Machines!
Special thanks to my husband, Henri, for all his support during the show prep and my kids for not chewing my gum. Thanks to everyone reading the blog who wished me well. I really appreciate your kind thoughts and words.
