Tickets for Texas Shredder and What A Show is Like
I’ve been getting a lot of requests for information about the Texas Shredder and how bodybuilding competitions in general work, so here’s the low down.

What’s the difference between Pre-Judging and the Night Show?
In a nut shell – the night show is shorter and showcases the top five winners in each category, although all athletes typically do get to stand on stage and do at least one pose for friends and family. If there are any fitness competitors they will do their gymnastics routines as the opening act, and sometimes the night show will have guest posers who are professional (paid) athletes who will do their routines. All winners get their trophy, in this case a samurai sword. #IWantASword
If you want to support your friend or family member and aren’t sure whether or not they will place in one of the top five spots, then Pre-Judging is the show for you. Be forewarned: it’s long. Depending on the number of competitors, the morning show can start at 9 a.m. and run until noon. It takes a long time because this is each athlete’s chance to shine.
How does Pre-Judging Work?
Let’s talk bikini, since that’s the division I’m in and know about. Each bikini competitor will get to do a solo walk on stage, called a T-walk, where she will do a right side pose, walk to center stage and do a front pose pivoting to a back pose, and then walk to the other side of the stage for her final left side pose. (While she’s doing her last pose, the next competitor walks on stage to do her first pose to keep things moving) After the T-walk, all the women line up on either side of the stage making a V shape. After the last woman has done her solo pose the exciting part begins: callouts.
The judges will call out five numbers (each woman wears her number pin on her right hip) and the ones in the first call out are the top five winners. But then judges have to figure out the ranking, so they do comparisons. The head judges says, “Front pose” and everyone faces front, then, “, ¼ turn to the right, back pose, ¼ turn to the right, back to front pose.” After this first round, the judges will usually ask one or two women to switch places and then the comparison poses start all over again until the ranking is set: 1st place, 2nd place and so on. Sometimes the judges will call in a new person standing on the sidelines, so that can get pretty interesting.
After the top five winners are decided, the next five women are called out (2nd callouts) and the comparison process is repeated. This continues in groups of five until the stage is empty. Note: Please clap loudly for the women in the last call out. Speaking from personal experience it sucks being in the last group and they all worked really hard too.
Order of the Show
The order of the divisions competing are as follows:
- Fitness
- Women’s Bodybuilding Open
- Men’s Bodybuilding Open (Lightweight & Heavyweight)
- Women’s Bodybuilding Masters 40+, 50+
- Men’s Bodybuilding Masters 40+, 50+, 60+
- Men’s Bodybuilding Teen
- Men’s Bodybuilding Novice
- Women’s Fit Body Open
- Women’s Fit Body Master 40+
- Figure Novice
- Figure Open (Short & Tall)
- Figure Masters 35+, 40+, 50+
- Figure Teen
- Men’s Physique Masters 40+
- Men’s Physique Teen
- Men’s Physique Novice,
- Men’s Physique Open (Short & Tall)
- Bikini Teen
- Bikini Masters 35+, 40+, 50+
- Bikini Novice (Short & Tall)
- Bikini Open (Short & Tall)
It’s hard to tell how long each division will take, because you never know how many people will show up. But since my divisions are at the very end (Bikini Masters 40+ and Bikini Open – Short) my husband is probably going to come around 10 a.m. to the Pre-Judging and see the Night Show from start to finish.
If you’re in the Austin area, I hope you can attend. It’s more novel than going to the movies and there’s something to be said about watching very fit men and women flexing their muscles in bathing suits. Just sayin’.
