Back to Plan A

My original goal for my 40th birthday was to do a fitness competition.  Somehow that morphed into doing a pole dance competition, then a Spartan Super Race, THEN a fitness competition, and end the year with entering an open mic night at a local comedy club.  This is why I should not combine alcohol with goal setting.

Anyway, I’m now training for my original goal – a fitness competition.  This is bodybuilding meets Dancing with the Stars, except there are no stars, just me attempting to deliver two minutes of awesome without falling and killing myself.  Also, the first part of the competition requires me standing on stage in a bikini doing figure poses.

So I’m back to strength training three days per week and cardio for five.  I’m also following my meal plan hardcore and have to start up my flexibility workouts again, which I took a break from after the pole dancing competition.  I’m looking forward to starting the dance choreography in June, which will give me six weeks to practice.

The good news is that the other fitness goals already accomplished tie in nicely with the current fitness goal I’m focusing on now.  They motivated me to eat clean after slacking off over Christmas, gave me short-term goals to look forward to, and showed me that I could do things outside my comfort zone.

The pole dance competition, in particular, was helpful because it my first time doing a solo dance on stage, so I was able to get rid of a lot of my fears surrounding dancing.  (Yes, I did take lessons during middle school, but since I was a) mostly in the back row so I could follow the other girls and, b) it was almost 30 years ago since my last dance recital, my pole competition was a completely different (and mildly terrifying – yet fun) experience than tap dancing at Miss JoAnn’s Dance Studio.  Also, this time around a pole was involved…two actually.  But don’t tell Miss JoAnn.)

Looking forward to my eight week countdown to my Plan A competition – yikes!

How about you?  Do you have any summer fitness goals?

  1. Well being that Im pregnant to not gain any excessive weight. That’s hard when your hormones and cravings want do-nuts and apple pie.

    1. Congratulations!! Cravings are so interesting. I heard that if it’s a girl you crave sweets and if it’s a boy you crave protein.
