What Do Bodybuilders Eat at a Baby Shower?
This weekend was packed. Saturday was The Shredder, a huge natural bodybuilding competition in Austin, TX (more posts to follow later this week,) and on Sunday about 20 people came over for my friend’s baby shower.
Best part of the shower? While I held the baby (he’s so cute!) I got a chance to watch everyone eat. “Lisa,” you say, “what’s up with that? I knew you were weird, but really?”
This was fascinating to me because everyone who came was either a bodybuilder or hardcore fitness enthusiast, including my trainer, Mel, a few teammates from Mel’s Machines, and people who had competed in several bodybuilding competitions (and won.) So of course I was curious to see what they would munch on.
For drinks I offered beer, wine, soda, diet soda, coffee and water. Results? I had to restock the water bottles twice and one liter of diet soda was drained. I think my husband had a beer with my friend’s husband.
The food was arranged on the table from healthy to very, very bad.
At the end of the party this was the result: The celery sticks and broccoli were cleared out, the carrots and tomatoes were left behind. All of the berries and most of the pineapple chunks were gone. Shrimp? Adios, amigo. (I actually heard one guest say, “Oh good! Protein!” when I pulled it out.) One woman brought her own food and was eating green beans out of Tupperware, which was pretty impressive.
The pigs in the blankets were devoured, and half the mini quiches and egg rolls disappeared, which was interesting to me, because they’re not even remotely healthy. (I guess even healthy people like their cheat meals.)
Barely a dent was made in the cheese and cracker category, although some of the hummus was sampled. No one touched the chips (they were even “healthier” ones – pita chips and veggie chips with sea salt.) The desserts (wrapped chocolates, biscotti, brownies and chocolate chip cookies) were the party lepers.
- *If you are my trainer reading this I gave away all the desserts to my kids’ teachers the next day**
- ** Except the chocolate chip cookies. I froze those in case of an emergency
Everyone had a slice of cake while she opened gifts, and the cupcakes disappeared, but I’m convinced most of them were eaten by my children, as evidenced by the blue icing on their faces all day. I pulled a little April Fool’s on some of the guests and said the cake was made with Greek yogurt and Stevia and their faces lit up and they were all, “Really!?!” And I was like, “No. Not at all. It’s pure sugar.” (Not everyone gets my sense of humor.)
So what was learned from this? Beyond the fact that I bought way too much food? Well, I think it was good for me to see everyone making rational food choices at a party. Guests were sociable and indulged in the cheat of their choice (pigs in the blanket/cupcakes) but didn’t go crazy, and balanced their plates out with veggies, berries, protein, and water.
So the next time you host a party for a group of bodybuilders, now you too will now what food to serve. 😉
How about you? Does your party food selection change according to the guests invited?

I am still kind of new to body building, but not truly new to clean eating. This *fascinated me!* Thank you so much for sharing! As Easter is coming I ponder what I will eat at my family gathering. I never even thought of bringing shrimp with me! (They are not seafood eaters. I didn’t encounter seafood until I met my husband and 20 plus years later FINALLY tried shrimp…) They always have a veggie tray and some fruit. Thank you so much for sharing!
Interesting. In my functions the wine is always gone
Hi Lisa!
This article was very interesting! My sister’s baby shower is coming up, and I know my aunt specifically bought veggies and hummus so I would eat something there. I am wondering why no one ate the hummus at your party? Is there something is it lacking or has too much of nutritionally? I met with a trainer three months ago who really encouraged me to eat more of it as a “protein source”.
Any insight would be interesting..thanks!
Thanks for reading my blog and congrats to your sister!
I believe that hummus, while much healthier than other things you may find at a snack table, is generally avoided by bodybuilders due to the fat content. Hummus is made of chickpeas and olive oil, which are good fats, but must be eaten in moderation.
Hope that answers your question, and enjoy your sister’s baby shower. Protein, veggies, and a little hummus sounds very yummy and well balanced. 😉
“in case of an emergency” HILARIOUS!!
Hee hee
Very interesting read. And very well done to all who made healthy choices. My choice of servings do change according to guests invited.
