2018 Resolutions

Hello 2018!

It must have been 1979 the first time I was aware of my mother writing New Year’s resolutions.  My house was at the dead end of the street surrounded by a forest.  People used to go hunting for deer there, but my mom said they banned it when my older brother was a baby because too many houses were being built and they were afraid someone would accidently get shot.

New Jersey is pretty cold in the winter.  I remember wearing my pink Wonder Woman pajamas and my wool feeties over them to stay warm, but the green and white kitchen laminate floor was still cold.   My mother was sitting at the kitchen table, drinking a cup of black coffee (with one packet of Sweet ‘n’ Low) and smoking a cigarette like always, but what was interesting to me was that she was also writing a list.  Not a grocery list, or a to-do list, but something that said Resolutions on the top.

“What’s that?”  I asked.

“My New Year’s resolutions.  I used to write them with my dad every year.  It’s a list of bad habits you’re going to break or things you want to do to improve yourself.”

“Like quit smoking?”  (Even as a kindergartener, I was a smartass.)

“Maybe next year, but yeah.”

I can’t remember exactly what she wrote, but usually her list included things like ‘lose weight’, ‘make more money’ and ‘be more patient with my family’.

I wasn’t writing yet so my mom helped me with mine.  I think it was along the lines of ‘stop fighting with my brother’ and ‘learn how to do a cartwheel’.  Anyway, a family tradition was passed on to the next generation and now it’s something I do with my own family in the relative warmth of Texas.

My 2018 Resolutions

This year I’d like to do three things:

  1. Encourage as many people as possible to get fit this year. To kick off this effort, I’m posting a free fitness challenge.  More details below.
  2. Learn Hip Hop. Originally I wanted to do Escape from Alcatraz, which is a triathlon where you bust out of the prison, swim to the shore, then bike/run your getaway, because it sounded ridiculously awesome, but then I found out you have to a) have previous experience completing a triathlon and b) win a lottery.  Also, I can’t swim very well and don’t own a bike, so…hip hop.  Yeah!  Hip hop!
  3. Write my next book. This is pretty hard and time consuming, but I guess not compared with training for a triathlon, right?
