So Red Meat Is OK Now?

Red meat

On Monday a new study came out that said all those previous studies that said eating red meat and processed meat was bad for you was overblown and adults should continue eating them as they always have.  The internet went bonkers.

Specifically the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health called the results questionable.

My main beef, pardon the pun, is that every few years studies tell us that one food is the anti-Christ and people go overboard and cut that food group entirely out of their diet and then a few years later new studies come out and say essentially, ‘Oops’.

That’s why I’m sticking to my own S.L.I. Method, which lets you eat all food groups found in nature.  That includes:

  • Protein – poultry, fish, eggs and, yes, red meat like lean steak and bison
  • Carbohydrates (another dietary boogeyman) – brown rice, old fashioned oatmeal, sprouted wheat (like Ezekiel bread) and sweet potatoes
  • Fruit – strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, apples, oranges
  • Vegetables – fresh and green are best
  • Healthy fats – avocado, almond butter, extra virgin olive oil
  • Dairy – Greek yogurt

    S.L.I. Method

My personal view as a woman who lost 50 pounds and as a personal trainer and fitness author is that the only foods that are “evil” are junk foods, super processed foods, and added table sugar because they serve no nutritional value for your body and pack on a ton of extra calories that tend to go directly to your tummy, thighs and butt, and who the heck needs that?

The key to maintaining a happy, healthy weight, is to monitor your portions, have a good mix of whole foods and if you do decide to have a cheat meal, don’t go overboard.

Food consumption does not have to be complicated.  Food is for fuel.  Food is not your friend to comfort you when you’ve had a bad day.  You also don’t need to cross-reference every study that comes out.

As Michael Pollen said, “Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.”  Back then processed food with fifteen ingredients you can’t pronounce was not a thing.  Frozen dinners weren’t yet invented.  Food industry empires were not trying to hook us on added sugar-salt-fat and confusing us with BS marketing that said “45% fewer calories than other brands”.

So don’t get frustrated by the newest studies out there.  Eat clean and train hard.  And if you need help with either, sign up for personal training with me.
