44

I’m 44 today.  I remember being all in a panic in my 30s that the big 4-0 was approaching, like it would be the end of the world.  What a song and dance we’ve been sold!  Take it from me, your 40s are fabulous.  I’m calmer, happier and more comfortable in my body than I’ve ever been.

Conspiracy theories are all the rage these days, so here’s my own theory:  All those rumors about women losing their sex appeal in midlife was a load of crap perpetuated by those Harvey Weinstein types who wanted to take advantage of young women in their 20s and didn’t know how to handle the powerhouses that are women in their 40s.

So if you’re a younger woman reading this, please know that each year of your life you will gain wisdom and confidence that only comes with overcoming whatever obstacles get thrown your way.  You can conquer the boardroom, motherhood and still rock a bikini if you so choose.  It takes more effort as you get older, but aren’t you worth the effort?

Winning the Musclemania Costa Rica sports model competition in July

Every year I create a challenge for myself, sometimes more, to push me out of my comfort zone and make me feel alive.  I’ve jumped out of planes, entered a pole dance competition (2nd place, who knew?) and did five minutes of stand up comedy.

Last year I had three goals – audition to be a WWE wrestler, write a book and do the final lift from the Dirty Dancing movie.  Guess how many I accomplished?  ZERO!  But with good reason.  Last year I didn’t much feel like dancing; those goals seemed to frivolous.  Last year I became an accidental activist.  You can read about it here: 1 Year After I Didn’t March.

This year, however, I’m narrowing my focus to just one goal that I’ve had since I was 13.  I’m ready to channel my inner Jennifer Grey/Patrick Swayze and get my Dirty Dancing on.  That lift scares the bejesus out of me.  But this year I’m all in.  I will learn the dance.

I’m off to lead a boot camp for a good cause (more on that later) and then eat some awesome sugar-filled cupcakes with my family, because balance.

Birthday to birthday – make it the best year of your life.

Lisa 😉
