3 Tricks To Say NO To Treats

witch-sheslosingit-comHere is a question from one of my readers:

With the holidays approaching how do you stay focused on your diet and also be with the family sitting around a table full of food?”

Ah, the holidays!  “The holidays” used to mean Thanksgiving + Christmas day.  Now it seems like the new holidays equation is:

Halloween + Thanksgiving Day + Thanksgiving leftovers + entire month of December + Christmas + New Years = Oh my God I’m going to gain 8 lbs. minimum!

As a bikini competitor I’ve done multiple competitions in November (meaning no Halloween candy) and early March (meaning I can’t go nuts over Christmas) so I have some experience with this.

Rather than write up a ton of tips, I’m going to break it down into bite-size tricks for each approaching holiday.  Here’s the first installment of my healthy holiday tips…

  1. Buy candy you don’t like.  I hate any candy with coconut, so Halloween bowls in my house are filled with Mounds bars.  I eat them never.
  2. Keep Halloween candy hidden (from me).  My kids keep their loot in their bedrooms instead of the kitchen counter.  My kids know that if the candy bowl is left in the kitchen it is likely that all Kit Kat, Hershey and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups will be gone by morning.  (Yeah, I’m that mom.)
  3. All candy not eaten within one (1) week will be donatedthank-you-soldiersA lot of local dentists will actually pay children $1 per pound of candy donated.  The candy is then shipped overseas to our military serving abroad.  This is good on so many levels. Here is the program: HalloweenCandyBuyBack

Hope those help!

And remember, you can also follow along the SLI Method 31 Day Challenge this month to keep you focused on making each day just a little bit healthier.
