Rough Morning

I was on the R subway travelling from Queens to my temp job in Manhattan in the frigid darkness of a winter’s Monday morning.  Stressing over student loans and not wanting to deal with my boss that morning, I stood in the crowd of woolen coats staring out the window, thinking about how rough my life was.

Then I saw him.

OK, not David Hasselhoff eating a burger off the floor in a drunken stupor, but close.  This guy, about my age, mid-20’s, was totally hung over, curled into the fetal position on the dirty subway station with the side of his face sticking to a slice of pizza in a box.  And I thought to myself, “Now this guy has a really rough morning ahead of him.”  And I felt better, ’cause, hey, I didn’t have a slice of pizza stuck to my face.

Perspective, right?

This morning’s workout was really rough for me.  I stayed up late last night watching stand up comedians on TV, it turned cold over night making me crave my bedroom blankets even more, and the very last thing I wanted to do was get out of bed to do cardio.  But I did it.  To demonstrate just how difficult it was for me to get out of bed, I made a nifty graph for you.

See?  So while it was not as difficult as negotiating world peace (“nearly impossible,”) or doing a straddle hold (“questioning sanity for attempting,”) Monday morning cardio was really rough for me.  If you too are having a tough time getting out of bed to get your workout in, feel free to think of pizza face kid or the effort required to achieve world peace to give you perspective about how hard it is to exercise in the grand scheme of things.

You got this.

How do you motivate yourself to exercise?

  1. With it being Winter there and you staying up late, I can totally understand that the motivation flew out of the window for the cardio.
If I have a late night, I rarely have the energy to even try to do any morning training and there aren’t motivation at all. If I am well rested and it’s Winter, the motivation comes from the fact that the evening crowd is much worse than the morning crowd.
