A Special Kind of Disgusting

The first two weeks of January I’m a certifiable grouch.  Know why?  Because I always eat too much over the holidays (even though I pretend I won’t) and then January 1st comes and not only do I have to take down all the Christmas decorations, but I also have to start (and stick to) my diet and get back into my gym routine.

The last time I was at the gym was December 20th.  Between then and now I drove 29 hours round trip to New Jersey, where there was no gym, but there was an ABUNDANCE of Christmas cookies.  Today was booty camp.

There is a special kind of disgusting you feel the first day back into a healthy “lifestyle,” isn’t there?  I sweat never, but I swear that today I looked like I was in a 1990’s Chris Farley sketch.  My stomach was all sorts of confused, “What are these green vegetables doing in here?  Where are the cookies?”  And my jeans were all, “Girl, you better get back to the gym if you want me to zip!”

So I’m grouchy.  And I will be in this state until about the 15th.  Know why?  Because it takes about 10 days for your body to stop craving sugar.  If you are one of those people who started a diet/went back to the gym for the first time on New Year’s Day, you will also be happier around January 15th.  Know why?  Because it takes two weeks to establish a new habit (like going to Crossfit); once established it’s easier to follow.   Also, you will begin seeing changes to your body after two weeks of healthy living, which will likely motivate you to continue.

Anyway, if weight loss was one of your resolutions, hang in there.

How about you?  Did you overindulge this holiday season?

  1. Hi Lisa!
I love your blog-I check it daily!
Just wondering how you know it takes 10 days to stop craving sugar? I find that interesting and it makes me very hopeful!
I was also wondering if you know whether or not you can eat ANY sugar during those 10 days to beat the craving? I love chocolate and am not sure I could survive 10 days without it.. I mostly use it in my protein pancakes to give them some flavor and to avoid using syrup.
    Thanks!

    1. Hi Amber,
Thanks for reading my blog! According to Kathy Freston’s book, “The Lean”, it takes about a week to regain metabolic balance after eliminating table sugar from your diet. From my own personal experience, it takes me about 10 days to get rid of my sugar cravings. I use Stevia instead of sugar, and it helps. I love chocolate too, so I make sure my protein shake is chocolate flavored.
      Good luck!

  2. Yep, totally. Our jeans must have gone to the same conference ’cause mine were saying the same thing! I started a little before New Year’s so I’m feeling pretty good at this point, but it was really startling to see just how fast you can slip down that sugary slope even after all this time. So glad I was able to self-inflict my intervention and get the holidays over with.

    1. Sugar is so sneaky!!! Glad you got through the holidays in tact. I’ll be back on track soon 🙂
