Want to Lose Weight? Go to Sleep

This was an interesting study reported in the Annal of Internal Medicine.  A study done by Arlet Nedeltcheva, MD and colleagues took 10 sedentary and overweight but otherwise healthy adults and limited their sleep to 5.5 hours per night over a two week period.  The other group slept for 8.5 hours per night.  Here’s what they found:

  • The sleep deprived group had higher levels of ghrelin, a hormone produced by the stomach to signal hunger
  • The sleep deprived group had lower levels of leptin, which is a hormone that signals the body is full and you should stop eating
  • In the sleep deprived group calories expended came more from lean body mass (muscle) and less from fat storage

So if you don’t get enough sleep you wake up hungrier and you lose muscle instead of body fat….I guess I better go to sleep now.  Here is a link to the study: Sleep Well and Stay Slim:  Dream or Reality?

Good night!
