Obamacare Deadline Today
Today, March 31, is not a particularly important day, unless you one of those people who waited until the last day to sign up for medical insurance. The LA Times estimates that about 6.8 million people have signed up so far. (Source: Obamacare Numbers Coming In.)
For those of you reading this in Canada, Australia, or some other country, the Affordable Care Act recently went into effect, also known as Obamacare, that says (among other things) everyone without medical insurance has to sign up for it by midnight tonight or face a penalty. This has been a really heated issue for Americans.
As self-employed small business owners, my husband and I fall into the category of having to sign up. My husband and kids always qualified for healthcare, but I had a lot of problems before this law came into effect because I had two cancer scares and the insurance companies thought I was too risky. So that was nice…(sarcasm)…But under the new law I can’t be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions; which really is nice. We just went with a health savings account.
I have a couple friends who never had insurance before because their companies didn’t offer any; they signed up for the silver plans and were able to get subsidies to offset the cost. Another friend is paying the penalty because she doesn’t qualify for subsidies, so it’s cheaper to pay a penalty than to buy insurance for her family. I have yet to meet a doctor who is happy about this new law. I have yet to meet an insurance broker who is unhappy about it.
So, I’m curious: What do you think about Obamacare?
